Is your child having difficulties in the area of speech and language
development? Are you looking for ways to help improve their
understanding and use of language along with their social skills?

If so, this class is for you!

This class is designed for parents to work together with a
speech/language pathologist to improve their child's overall
communicative abilities.

This unique class provides you the opportunity to observe and utilize
therapy techniques as modeled by a certified speech/langauge
pathologist on a weekly basis.  You will learn how to work with your
child at home and meet other parents with similar concerns.

Each week the group will focus on a different theme. We'll engage
your child in fun, learning activities based on the theme for that
week.

Who would benefit from a social skills group?
Children who are developing language but exhibit delays in their use
of social skills may be appropriate candidates for our groups. These
children may have difficulty initiating or responding to peer play
statements, transitioning from one activity to another or behaving
appropriately in a small group setting.

What skills are addressed in the group?
The goals for the groups are determined by the needs of children in
them.  Depending on your child, goals may include initiating
conversation with a peer, responding to peer play statements, turn
taking (in both a conversation and game playing activity) and
appropriate body posturing. Goals will be addressed in a variety of
fun activities that are appropriate for the age and developmental
level of the participants.

Is my child appropriate for your group?
Prior to your child being placed in a group, you and your child will be
asked to come in for a brief consultation. At that time an informal
assessment will be conducted of your child's social skills and
language functioning. Information gained through the observations
conducted along with parental input will be used to determine
the appropriate placement for your child. Children will be grouped
by age and function.

Why the consultation?
ChildWorks will not put children together in a group who are not
appropriate matches for each other. We may have several different
children needing groups that have very different needs. We will not
form a group if the children are not of similar age and need.

How will I know what goes on during the group and what to practice
at home?
It is so very important for you to know what we do in group so you
can practice at home. Each week you will receive a lesson plan
indicating what took place during that session. It will provide you
information on the goals we worked on, the activities we engaged
in and suggestions for activities to do at home. In addition, you will
receive a homework assignment for the week, as well. We will also
write down some notes on how your child did during the session.
